The goal of the game is to fence in more territory than your opponent.
The game usually starts with both players trying to secure the corners (the easyest bits to fence in), then it spreads out to the sides of the board, and finally to the middle of the board (the hardest part to control).
Good players try to stake out a large portions of the board with just a few stones, and then quickly move on to other areas. The exact borders between the two players groups usually aren't fleshed out until late in the game.
If you do a search, you can find some good sites with tips and example games. You can also download free programs that let you practice against the computer. IgoWin has a great practice game for a 9x9 board.
