As you're skating forward, turn your hips and shoulders at the same time. Your knees should be slightly bent and basically your nose should be in line with your knees. Your weight will be above the back skate, but dig in with your front skate. You're basically throwing your weight behind you. If you're not on enough of an angle, you're gonna know it! Hello, ice!! Since you're just starting, make sure you wear a helmet! You're gonna fall a few times. Don't think you won't!

I can do it but let me see if I can explain how to do it.
You turn both skates in the same direction. Shift your weight back so your weight is on the trailing edge of the blades. You should skid to a sideways stop, and kick up a little snow.

Its hard to explain, if you are talking about ice skating you turn you hips and legs sideways, to where you know how the ice comes spraying off your skates. Have someone who knows show you.

start with learning how to do the snow plough stop to get the feeling of the blades releasing from the ice. when you get comfortable with that, push one foot outward, while standing still, and keeping the blade on the ice, as to push a pile of snow from the surface of the ice. then do it with the other foot. when the concept of the necessary pressure required to slide and stop comes to you, see any of the other answers posted here to master your stop.
