My grandmother has always wanted her own cafe/country diner type business and she can cook and bake like a champ. I also learned how to cook by watching and listening to her. So my mother and I would like to try and open up a diner and bring my grandmother in to help with it. I know that there are all types of grants available to women/single mothers who want to open a business but you have to have your plan completely mapped out. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as trying to research how to get this started? Thank you.

You can always make an appointment with the small business administration to ask questions about starting your own business. My family runs a small breakfast and lunch cafe. I can tell you first hand that 70% of all restaurants fail. The statistics are out there. I know we worked long hard hours unfailingly and for the first couple of years took no profit. We are celebrating 20 years in October. Good luck to you.

Go to http://www.score.org/ to find the nearest SCORE chapter. Contact them to arrange for a free one on one meeting with a SCORE counselor.

"Night Win" gave some great advice. Talk to your local small business association. I would suggest talking to the owners of local café's as well. You don't want to set up shop in an area that is already saturated with cafés, and neither do they. Heck, one of them might want to go into the venture with you!

Good luck!
