I work at the Fairfield Inn in Auburn Hills....I hate that too!! I guess they are in a hurry or they just hate their lives and don't realize that they need to respect us!! Hang in there!! :)

I'm not rude when I check in! I try to be polite for the person after the desk, they are just doing their work. Of course I expect the same back. Surely in more expensive hotels.

Possibly a miss understanding on your guest part. Some believe good service means wading hand and foot and settling for nothing less. It is possible that today's guest (hopefully few) are nothing more than just plain rude and it would be best for you to just consider the source. Sorry you are subject to the lack of courtesy.

First off, a lot of guests any more are NOT staying on leisure, which means they are probably starting off their trip by not wanting to be there in the first place!

Second off, even if there are leisure guests to consider, odds are they had a crappy flight in an uncomfortable seat with babies squalling incessantly, so they aren't starting their trips in the best of moods.

I'm not saying there's an excuse for rudeness, but there usually is a reasonable explanation besides malice toward you.

Travelling makes people angry. By the time we have reached the hotel, we are at our wit's end. I recognize when I am doing this myself and I try to apologize right away (I'll admit, I'm not perfect at this...) because it is definitely not the hotel staff's fault that I had a bad day.

They are irritable & tired from traveling so much. Also, they may get the feeling that they are famous, since they are checking in a "nice" hotel,or the best room available. Hope this answers your question.

Because we don't live in a perfect world and it takes all kinds to make it go around. Not everyone is rude. The ones that are rude make you more appreciate the polite guests.

i work at a resort, front desk, and i totally know what you mean. but the thing is that you can totally change their mood if you use the right attitude, i'm a psychology major so i'm very good about getting people to smile using different methods...... some people just are unreachable because their too high on themselves, oh well, sometimes you hafta just accept it and work with a smile :)

oh and check out our resort, it's nice so some people think they need to be snobby cuz their paying for a nice hotel: www.bayvalley.com

Perhaps because they have either been in a car for several hours dealing with traffic and, perhaps, whiny kids or they are just coming from the airport where they were given all but a rectal exam because they forgot to remove that bottle of contact lens solution from their carry on bag.

Jetlag or a long drive with the entire family in the car could make anyone feel grumpy and behave rudely. Smile, be courteous, and don't take it personally-tired people are rarely on their best behavior.
