There are different ways to be harmful. The Mosquito causes more harm generally than most insects, because they carry desease. The Fleas caused the Black Plague of 1918 in America.
For personal harm, as an individual the Recluse Spider can cause sections of flesh to actually die.
This occurs to the area of the bite and spreads.
The Violin spider is second in line for dangerous bites.

Well, I guess this question would have several different answers depending on how you look at it. I would guess that mosquitos are the most frequent to harm people. I mean right now I think I probably have six mosquito bites. And they can also carry deadly disease like malaria. So, I consider them the most harmful although they probably arent the ones you should avoid the most. Scorpions and other insects definately have more potent poison and can cause a injury quicker than a mosquito bite.

You have some good answers.
I favor the mosquito in all of its species for the wide variety of diseases they carry and suffering they cause. The anophiline mosquito carries malaria. The culex mosquitoes carry encephalitis. The aedes mosquito carry yellow fever. That is just to name a few. Millions of people are diseased and die from the effects of mosquito bites every year.
Yes, there are other insects that bring death and disease, including the Tse tse fly, the sand fly, the flea, kissing or assassin bug, bed bug, etc. Even though the flea could put in a good argument for being the worst, I still think the mosquito is worst because the flea only has one disease to attack with whereas the mosquito has many diseases.
Spiders, ticks, scorpions and other creatures are not insects and therefore don't qualify in this question.

I believe the most harmful/dangerous insect would be the flea. Although, the flea cannot kill you by itself, it carries sickness from one region of the world to the other. The flea was the carrier of the "black death" that wiped out whole towns and regions in the middle ages. It is still one of the most common carriers of sickness and the main reason why most goods inported by ship are sprayed for insects. .

Does it have to be an insect?
If so I would say the African Killer Bee. They fly in swarms and can kill a human in as little as 4 stings.
If not I would say the Brown Recluse Spider. Just look at some pictures of Brown Recluse bites and you will understand.
The difference between the two: Bees are loud and noticeable, especially when they fly in swarms. Spiders are sneaky, quiet and you never know where one may be, they are also more likely to bite you while you are sleeping then the Killer Bee.

From a point of spreading diseases, then you would have to say the mosquito or the flea. However if you mean harmful in the way of say crop losses then you would go for the Locust

Without doubt it's the mosquito which kills hundreds of thousands of people each year through transmitted diseases.
A recent TV documentary put the mosquito as second only to man as the world's worst killer of human beings.
