One of my playtes has his right side fin almost cut in half. It looks as if someone took a bit out of him and along the edge it's all white. My other playte also has this on his back fin. Its white around the edge like the other one. i did a water change to see if it would help like 3 days ago. I tested the water and all of the levels are perfect. i have no clue why this is happening.

Treat them with salt for freshwater aquariums. Use one table spoon for every 5 gallons of water on the first day. Add another tablespoon of salt for every 5 gallons on the second day, and change half of the water on the third day to bring the salt back to normal levels. Make sure the water you use to replace to old water has been warmed to the temperature of your tank to reduce stress. From now on, add aquarium salt to all the water you add when doing water changes. It will prevent problems like fin rot and ich, and promote healing of damage fins/missing scales.

This is fin rot. Most likley a fungal infection. Fungal find rots are even with a white edge. Bacterial fin rots in a more ragged fashion. I'd treat with an antifungal agent. Note that fin rot is often a secondary infection. A mild broad spectrum antibacterial treatment might also be in order. (Something like PimaFix.)

Fin rot usually occurs where a fin has been nipped or ripped. Do you have other types of fish that could be fin nipping, or too many male platys causing aggression towards each other? that may be the root of the problem.

You can treat fin rot by adding medicaiton found at any pet store (melafix is one brand).

Good luck

grab your self some fin rot medication from your local fish store... or tea tree oil i have been told is the same thing.... a friend uses it as a preventative and throws a bit in every so often... she swears it is the same thing as the medication in the store that sells for 3X as much...

best of luck
