Depends on what you're asking, and what type of iPod you're talking about. My first iPod mini lasted about a year and a half, but I was able to get it replaced because of a problem with the device. The batteries in most of the iPods are rated to last about 2 years, 3 if you don't charge them too often. iPod nano, and iPod shuffles have different life expectancies, though, I think they're around 2 years max.

Battery life, as in how long a battery charge lasts, is anywhere from 14 - 22 hours depending on your device. The new 5th(?) gen iPods have batteries that will last you almost 24 hours playing only music, my iPod mini will last me about 16 hours.

My first, a 4th generation iPod Nano (8GB), was a Christmas gift when I was 16 - I'm now 23 and it just crapped out on me a few months ago. So, as long as you take good care of it, it can last at least 7 years! I will never buy another brand - my husband is exhausted by my search for such a specific MP3 player but, I'm telling you, Apple is the best way to go :)

Apple comes out with a new and improved one every year. So I would say an iPod lasts about a year. Ha.
I'm waiting for the bigger screen to come out next year before I upgrade my mini.
My friend Steve, who is a major Apple Geek says it depends on how well you treat it. The battery lasts 2 years and can be replaced. They are expected to last 3+ years. He has had his for over 5 years now.

My 2nd generation shuffle just kicked the bucket today, and I think I bought it in 2008 so I'm pretty happy with that lifespan. I just got a 5th generation ipod and hope it lasts as long.

It deponds how you take care of it
also ipods come in different kinds. Like a apple ipod, Ipod nano a regular ipod shuffle. Ipod shuffles hold memory to 512 mb megabites about 100 to 200 songs. ipod nano holds 1 gb gyga byte to 4 gygabites about 1,000 to 4,000 songs. A apple ipod is either 30 gb or 60 gb gigabytes hold more than 10,000 songs and holds videos.

Reliability testing is performed to determine the useful life of the memory and other ICs, for HD based systems the MTTF for hard drives would determine usefull life of those ipods.

In general memories are tested to determine how long they retain data without significant degradation. Usually this is 10 years or more.

For hard drives they need to be able to withstand mechanical shock from bumps and drops. The read/write heads can gouge holes in the disks. So these ipods are prone to skipping and data loss due to head crashes from rough treatment. I would put MTTF for HD in the 5 year range.

I don't have an iPod, but I'm sure that every electronical device has a warranty. Also, it mostly depends on how you treat your iPod, and also how loud you play the music and how many times you use it every day.If you have been treating it fine and it suddenly doesn't work anymore, take your iPod to the apple store with the warranty.
