Go to Wal-Mart & look in the crafts section. They have all the utensils needed & books that you can teach yourself with. This is how I learned to crochet. Have fun!

Lion Brands website is very helpful. If you have cable/satilite (or you have a friend or nieghboor who does) I'd really suggest watching/recording this show on DIY network called "Knitty Gritty", to save yourself money go to your local library and check out every book on knitting you can find. When you have some free time or your home alone just take out all the books open them up to the knitting instructions, it helps to have way more that one because every books explaination is different and you might understand one better than the others. Read the instructions look at the illustrations and just keep at it, don't give up even if you don't get it the first time (I didn't get it at first but I kept trying). And find a knitting group on yahoo just in case you need the help, they'll all be more than happy to help you in any way they can. I hope this helps you, from one self taught knitter to another. Goodluck

I thought myself to knit. You can either buy a book from a craft store, like Michaels or even Walmart and teach yourself. That's how I did it. Or check out your local library, they may have a book to show you how.
There are also some great websites you can check out too.
www.lionbrand.com will show you the basics. They have some really great beginner patterns to start with as well.
www.learntoknit.com and www.knitting.about.com will show you the basics.
As far as what you need, I would just get a size 10 or 10 1/2 needle and a couple of skeins of yarn to start with and practice with. Once you get the hang of it, you can go from there.
Have fun!!

Have you got a library near by, you should be able to get a book from there that will teach you how to knit, and if you cannot get to a craft shop to get wool and kneedles secondhand shops usually have that sort of thing or you could look on Ebay.

I taught myself to knit with a combination of books (I really love Stitch 'n B****, even though some knitters scoff at it) and the website http://www.knittinghelp.com for their excellent videos.
I learn best by reading, but the videos really came in handy for illustrating the things that I was trying.
Good luck!

Search in Yahoo Groups for Knitting groups in your area. For example, if you are from Seattle, use keywords "Seattle" and "knitting". Join a few online groups, see when / if they meet near you. I go to a Barnes and Noble every Wednesday night to gab and knit with several others, all of whom are happy to show techniques, help correct errors, etc.

Go to www.lionbrand.com they have instructions on how to knit or crochet, but it really helps if you can find a neighbor or friend who can teach you.
Good luck.
