I would probably say something by James Joyce.
Ulysses
To the poster below me:
Beowulf....are you sure? I believe that was written around 1100 AD. Also...isn't it a poem...not a novel?
In the year 1007 a Japanese noble woman, Murasaki Shikibu, wrote the world's first full novel. Called "The story of Genji," it tells the story of a prince looking for love and wisdom.

The first novel ever written was not Don Quixote. It was Beowulf. No author was attributed to the tale, but it was the first, according to my knowledge of Literature. And, the Bible is not a novel.
The most famous novel, as far as how many copies of the book have been sold in the world, goes to the first Harry Potter book, I'm afraid.
Sorry, folks, but that's marketing for you.

extremely. See "The grotesque American," under. somewhat some different novels, possibly no longer somewhat so properly ordinary, have been team-written. Stephen King and Peter Straub wrote a minimum of one togethe, and Arthur C. Clarke wrote a pair with yet another author. Oh, then there is "bare got here the Stranger," which had 24 authors.

The first novel ever written and the best - Don Quixote, by Miguel De Cervantes written in 1604. The novel is funny, sad, scary, romantic, ironic, profound, yet best of all it's fun to read.
