You have to observe them closely. You will be able to tell if they are fighting. Also, do you have males or females? or one of each? All very important when it comes to hamsters. The best way to have hamsters though, is in separate cages. As they mature they can become very territorial. You don't want to come home one day to fatalities. Plus, if you have a male and a female, eventually you will have babies. Sometimes, the male will hurt the babies. plus, if you don't pull the babies out in time, the males start looking upon their sisters and mother as potential "mates". Now, since it only takes three generations of inbreeding in rats to show deformities, do you really want to risk it?
As for the sqeaking. Squeaking, teeth chattering (gnashing) are all ways that they communicate. You just have to match what's going on with the proper sounds.

You can keep them in the same cage, this doesnt mean that they will not fight though. They might just not get on.Keep an eye on them for injuries or fighting, if they seem ok then they were probably just playing.

Yes, Chinese and Russian hamsters are fine; Golden or Syrian aren't - they fight to the death.

They are usually okay when kept in pairs as long as they are from the same litter, however sometimes they do fight and will need to be seperated. :o)
