I've been seeing them around a lot lately, and I'm pretty sure they don't sting or bite.

They are called Mosquito Hawks and they don't bite or sting. They are actually pretty cool because they eat mosquitos.

As previously posted, the most common ones you see in your house are Crane Flys. they're harmless.

But also they could be male mosquitos. Fortunately, male mosquitos also don't bite.

What you are referring to is probably the crane fly. They are harmless and serve no other purpose in their adult form other than to mate and be eaten by other animals. They spend the vast majority of their life cycle in the water as benthic macroinvertebrates. In other words, they live as larvae on the bottom of streams and rivers. The family name is ceratopigonidae or something like that.

I am on the Mosquito Hawk band wagon. Don't have anything to back it up, its just what I have known them as since I was little.
