I have information on the laptop that I want but the power board took a nose dive then the battery was stolen by the shop. I want to get the information off the drive and view it on my computer but I have no idea how.

You can only open up your laptop and take out the hard drive. Install it in another computer, and voila you're good to go.
Use Norton's ghost partition if you want to copy the old hard drive to another hard drive in another computer.

If the laptop will boot up the:
1. use a USB drive to transfer data
2. use a floppy to tranafer data
3. use a CD/DVD to transfer data

If the laptop will not boot up:
1. take the hard drive out and hook it up to another laptop
2. take the hard drive out and hook it up to a controller card (avaliable at most computer stores)
3. take it to a computer shop (such as mine) and have someone get the data off for you(shouldn't cost more than 5 bucks).

If none of this works than you might as well give up.

The easiest way is to remove the hard drive and stick it in another computer as a second drive. These days, the fastest way of doing that is to get an external hard drive box at the computer store (they make them sized for notebook drives). Install the drive in that and plug it into the USB port of a similar sort of computer (same vintage Windows, or similar vintage Mac). The drive will appear on the desktop and you can simply move whatever files you like.

The shop stole the battery? I think you should be able to make them reimburse you for it. That sucks.

1. for around 40$ , ask for a notebook harddisk enclosure at any electronic shop. (look for the words USB2 )
2. get a philips screw driver.
3. Now go online on your second /new / work laptop /desktop.
download the instructions to remove the old laptop harddisk (it usually is 2 screws, depends on model) and remove it.
4. fit the hard disk in the enclosure. u bought, plug it to your new / computer thru USB port.
5. switch things on. they will appear as new hard disk drives .
6. Just copy paste , documents.
-----------------------------
6b. if you want an exact replica , with the programs and all set up.. as it was then you need a image drive tool - check Nero 7 or arconis Imaging tools.

You can have a computer shop remove the drive for you and then have it installed on your other computer, you may need an adaptor since laptop drives have different connectors. Then you can just access the drive to view your files. If you have room in your computer you can just keep the laptop drive and use it as additional storage.

Go to Frys or another computer store and buy a wire that hooks up to your laptop disk drive and to the Ide wire from the desktop, its the cheapest way to do it, the cost is like $5 bucks. Dont go for the other expensive kits or data back up. Ask the guys that work there, i dont exactly know what the wire is called, but I did it myself once.

you can buy a kit from most computer stores (best buy, comp usa carry them) which will turn a laptop drive into an external usb drive- i had the same problem as you and did this. Remove the hard drive from the laptop, put in the kit( it's really easy) and then attach the usb cable on the kit to your other computer. The kit costs around $30.

Your working computer should be able to see the external hard drive and it should show up under "My computer".

1. get an external hard drive enclosure (for 2.5" drive)
2. install old HDD into said enclosure
3. plug into USB or Firewire port of another PC
4. copy required files

OR

you can try Acronis MigrateEasy or a similar program to transfer your old HDD to a new PC/notebook so that it'll be like you're using the exact same computer you were before

You can remove the hard drive, power it up and see if it works. If the drive is functioning, you can then transfer the data.
There are several methods of powering an internal hard drive. See the link below.

Just hook it up to an external monitor or HDTV for the meantime and use transfer software to your new laptop. I would not suggest a 1:1 hard drive swap due to licensing issues.
