That is just disgusting. I'd probably turn around and call him out. Ask if there is a problem. If it makes you uncomfortable, you should report him to the manager at the gym though, and hopefully his membership gets terminated. There has to be a harassment policy at the gym that states that members should be able to come and work out and not feel uneasy before or after. Just try not to get into anything physical with him.

Completely ignore him and move on. Act as if he doesn't exist. Do not get into any type of stupid argument with him. Don't give him the time of day.
Whenever things are not going your way, use it to show how much class you have.

I would talk to the owner of the gym and explain to him what happen so they can keep an eye on him. If it were me i would beat the living daylights out of him.
