Well, thinking the term 'British' only describes the English is one thing that would hack me off!

Sorry, but the Scots and the (Northern) Irish ARE British. Take some geography lessons!!!!
The reason why the Scots and the N. Irish hate the ENGLISH is because the English have historically tried to 'conquer' these countries and have been trying to control them ever since!
I don't think the feelings are that strong anyway - it's more of a tradition, same as the British hate the French!

I am one Scot who does not hate England - in fact I have a very strong affinity with Norfolk - I was brought up there as a child and I love it! Every 3 or 4 years we always go back for a holiday.

Most Scots who dislike England more often then not have only lived in scotland and have been imbuded with a sense of identity that is purely scottish. Hate the English because of Edward I etc..

But I have been brought up to appreciate people as people or as individuals, not nationalities, so I have no general dislike of people from any country.

There are only two sorts of people in this world - good and bad - and that's it.

if you are going to call them scots and irish, you cant really call yourself british in the same sentence. The Irish hate the English because they were bullied and victimised and beaten by the English for years for being Catholic. We, the Scots, just see it as part of our identity I think. We fought the English for 200 years, and we dont really want to stop having an Auld enemy now. You find that the Scots feelings dont actually run very deep however, and it is a jokey-jokey Scots humour type thing to say. The English seem to get very offended and upset at it however.

god, why are english people so adverse to scots taking the piss out of them once in a while? i'm english and take it for what it is: an old rivalry. sometimes i make fun of them. it isn't racism. it's all in good taste, for the most part. i've been friends with quite a few jocks.

the english have caused trouble for the scottish and irish people for years.

and yeah, you made yourself look like a total idiot calling the english british. okay, yes, we are british, but so are the welsh, the scottish and the northern irish (officially they're part of the uk but i'm not going into semantics).

Everybody loves to hate their neighbours. It's so much easier to find reasons.
The main one is the unbearable arrogance and xenophobia exhibited by some English.

But I think hardly anybody in Scotland or the Republic of Ireland is ever even uncivil to an English person unless they are rude first.
Of course we have our idiots, just like you.

okay here is why....
firstly the english think they are above everyone, and that makes the scottish and irish jelous
the scottish hate the english cos of that, as does the irish
the scottish love the irish and the irish love the scottish, and well everyone tends to forget about the the welsh, ! PS am from scotland but am one of the ones who like the english and know my fellow scots are just jelous we will get over it oneday! xx

Maybe the Scots, Irish and Welsh feel they have been dominated by the English and they don't like it I guess!

Just like the Brits feel about the Americans...

Ah, the downside of being superior...
