This seems to be answer...although when I has tesco on their modem this used to happen regularly so I got a modem router for £20 ish and it solved the issue. Indication a problem with the speedtouch modem/ or software. (plus with modem/router I can use ethernet instead and be online instantly) No speedtouch connect procedure.
But try the below suggestion
This is called a high-open and you should ring BT on 151, do not quote anything about Broadband, just say you are getting a lot of noise on the line when you phone people and they will sort this out for you. A high-open means your line has corrosion at the joints between yourself and the exchange, and the signal is seriously affected by this. The reason your broadband works when you are on the phone is because the signal generated by the phone call is causing a higher voltage on the line which is in turn causing the signal to just about make it past the corrosion.
The only other solution is that you have a phone somewhere in your house connected without a filter. So filter it!

If you really did have broadband internet, you would'nt need a dial tone and a phone line. Broadband comes in through the cable line. No phones lines are at all involved. If you are connected through the phone lines, and this is the problem, you may have a problem with it because you have call waiting and when someone calls you when you're online, the incoming call kicks you off line. There are settings you can go into to fix that so you don't get kicked off internet every time any call comes in. Broadband is NOT dial up, it's a cable connected internet hookup. You need to figure out which one you really have. It's impossible to have the high speed broadband internet through the phone lines.

i'm having the same problem with my bt broadband. In my case there is a fault with the phone-line. But not knowing what kind of set up you have. It's hard to tell. Either have your phone line checked with you supplier. Or re-check all of your set up connections. Or get back onto tesco's. Good luck. Hope you get it sorted.

If u have tried other things and nothing seems to be working it could be happening because u are located in the countryside and are at the end of the broadband line. Thats what happened to me. I had to fone the broadband company to send out a more powerful reciever.

The most likely answer to your problem is to replace your modem. I had a similar problem with BT Broadband, but as soon as I replaced their cheap and nasty free modem I stopped having the problem.
Also, consider an internal modem to speed things up a bit.
Good luck!

replace the modem if its losing connection at that point, if not that, then you need a service call to have them check the lines
