Avoid abrasive products and strong chemicals, they can mark your ipod forever! You can use isopropyl alcohol (Maplin) and a piece of cotton to wipe the smudges. You should consider getting a protective cover for the ipod (less cool but hey, you want it looking good).
Best luck

Sell your current ipod quick (perhaps via ebay) then buy the new model ipod. Its has better overall performance and no silvery back thus smudges are much more less likely.
