I had my first child at 27 years old. (I have 2 children and their father and I are seperated.)
I live in Northern California where it's almost impossible to buy a house without an income of at least $150,000. And, the cost of a basic house starts at around $500,000.
I am 36 years old and will probably not be able to buy a house until my children are grown. Daycare for my daughter is $1000 month. During the summer and school breaks daycare for my son is over $200/wk. I live in a cheaper (meaning old and rundown) 2 bedroom apartment that's rents for $1200/mo. If I wanted a 3 bedroom apartment that would cost almost $2000, for the lower end. If that seems like a lot, consider that my friends with homes pay btwn $4000-$8000 month for their mortgages.

Do you feel better yet?

I was 27 when I bought my first home and a single mother =) but I had too take care of my Grandmother and needed the space.

Don't feel behind buying a house is a huge financial responsibility and it only makes sense to do it when you can afford to do. It's hard to enjoy a house when it's draining your checkbook

I was 25 when my partner and I bought our first house. If I had to do it on my own, I'd still be renting an apartment (at 30).

Don't feel behind....if anyone asks, tell them you're waiting for just the right time and just the right house - that you don't want to 'settle' like a lot of people do.

You are not late at all as I am forty nine, travelled the world over number of times and decide now to look for the best mortgage deals and settle for a house. You haven't started life according to me and when you think of buying a house, you are much more advanced in being a provident person !!!! cheers

I had just turned 20 but I know I was young when we bought ours. I'm now 23 and know a ton of people my age and older who still live at home or rent.
