There is no single satisfactory answer to this question, but rather a number of explanations which help to explain the high levels of crime plaguing the country.

Here are a few "explanations":
1. The violent past (history) of SA.
2. Transition from Apartheid to freedom.
3. A violent culture.
4. Proliferation of firearms.
5. Organised crime syndicates.
6. Youthful population.
7. Rapid urbanisation.
8. A weak criminal justice system.
9. Substance Abuse.

Here are a few reasons:
A Government that doesn't care about crime so long as it does not affect their pocket.
A corrupt,ill trained,demotivated Police Force.
A lack of acceptance of Western democratic values.
A corrupt political Leadership that leads the way by defrauding the Public and making promises of wealth to the citizens that it cannot keep.
The misperception that it is a Democracy when in fact it is a Kleptocracy.
The Government inspired view that stealing from whites is not stealing but merely taking back what was yours.
A continuous collapse of Health Systems,Education,Public Services.Security and a general erosion of human rights.
Maybe some day someone will write a book or rather an encyclopedia on the demise of South Africa but there is not enough space here to list everything.

There is no stable government or control. There is extreme poverty. There is disease everywhere. Those all seem like pretty good reasons to me for there to be so much crime.

Why is there so much crime in the USA? Could it be due to poverty and social injustice?
