I think if you just turn off the water and turn off the automatic setting you will be fine. You need out drain all the water out, sometimes there is a release valve to do so.
Just make sure there is no water left in the pipes and the timers are shut off to where water won't be going through the pipes anymore you'll be fine

Lawn sprinkler systems are not pressurized so they will eventually drain. The water left even frozen will not damage the system and will melt by the time you need to use the sprinklers in the fall.
Why worry about the small sh**.

Most sprinkler systems have a drain valve which you open after you have turned off the water. You can then blow out the lines with air if you have an air compressor

if it was professionally installed, you shouldn't have to worry about anything except turning the water off. there are anti siphon drain valves installed in low spots of the water line. they drain when no pressure is in the line. if you installed it yourself, take the head off the first and the last sprinkler, blow air though them with a compressor till water stops coming out and replace the heads.

If your climate gets extremely cold, you may want to hire a professional to carry out this task. Make sure they have some form of warranty or guarantee. Otherwise, the previous answers should suffice.
