Chav is a slang term in the United Kingdom which appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005[1][2] .
The term "chav" refers to a subcultural stereotype of people fixated on fashions such as flashy "bling" jewellery (Generally gold), and designer clothing with the beige Burberry pattern (most famously the baseball cap which has since been discontinued by the company), and such brands as Lonsdale, Berghaus, Burberry, Von Dutch, Louis Vuitton, Stone Island, Kappa, Ben Sherman, Adidas, Nike, and best-known Sergio Tacchini. Musically chavs also tend to have a different taste mainly involving rap, dance music and an unusual type of music known as New Monkey. Response to the term has ranged from amusement to criticism that it is a new manifestation of classism.

There isn't anything that definately defines chavs as chavs, and you can't call your mate one because they are generally known as rude youths, mostly in council houses, they sit at the back of the classroom swearing at the teacher, smoke a lot, drink a lot and have a lot of sex with fellow chavs. They mostly wear tracksuits or hoodies, with a lot of 'bling' (cheap large market jewellery). They are just unpleasant people, and if you see a group of loud rude people then they are most likely to be chavs.

They wear Burberry caps and grotesque bling jewellery, they speak a strange language that no-one is able to interpret, they beat up old ladies for their pension money, they steal cars which they later set fire to on wasteground, they pee in the corridors of the blocks of flats they reside in, they shoplift, they've generally got 3 or 4 illegitimate children by the time they're 19 and their pet of choice is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier sporting a studded collar

In Scotland they are referred to as neds ( Non Educated DelinquentS . No hopers, girls pregnant by 15, boys fathering many children by many mothers and having no interest in anything other than drinking,Smoking dope and amassing large quantities of cheap gold jewelery. I believe the Chav is the English version and that it stands for Council Housed And Violent

Possibly stands for Council Housed and Violent?! Seems to mainly mean someone who likes designer/designer rip-off clothes, big argos jewellery, and is looked down on by Guardian readers from Islington. Probably most of Britain then?!
