You mean democratic government (or democracy) and a republic.

They are very similar. Though there is atleast one subtle difference. A president of a republic can make his position hereditary and/or span his entire lifetime.

A republic is a government of more than one person.

A democracy is any government model where the ultimate decision making power is held by the population.

A pure democracy has no intermediaries. Each decision is made by general group vote.

A republic is a representative democracy, where the population votes to elect individuals who will make the decisions, rather than the population directly voting on the decisions themselves.
