Rick James was a singer... he had a few big hits in the late 70's and 80's. 2 of his most popular songs are "Super Freak" and "Mary Jane". He was known for living a wild party life style, and apparently it caught up to him. He passed away about a year or two ago.

Rick James WAS a funk/soul singer. He was more popular in the late 70's and early 80's. He wore braids for most of his career, and was known for his wild parties, out of control behavior and sexual escapades.
Actually, if you go to allmusic.com, you can get a better bio of him there than what I can. And, you can get a 30 second sample of some of his best songs.
If you saw the movie "She's all That" and in the scene where Matthew Lillard is dancing in the living room of a house party, he's dancing off of "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James.
Hope this helps!!

Rick James was an American Funk/Soul who worked as a singer, keyboardist, bassist, record producer, arranger, and composer during his career. The famous catch phrase "I'm Rick James *****" was actually used by James himself quite frequently while intoxicated. He admitted this to Dave Chappelle during the recording of the "Rick James" episode.

Rick James was a 70's/80's funk singer. His most famous hit was 'Super Freak' whose melody was actually used as the background for MC Hammer's song, 'U Can't Touch This' in the 90's. He was also famous for his cocaine addiction. Both are played upon in the parody of him on Chapelle Show.
