In your opinion, what is the best laptop for me?
*I am a college student and we have wireless internet on campus (so I need a wireless internet card)
*I need software that will keep out viruses, spyware, adware, etc. and I would like this software to be included with the laptop.
*I need office software, especially Word and Powerpoint
*I will be playing some games on it.
*I will be multitasking and I need something quick...
What are your suggestions?

This if just so I can get a good idea of what actual PEOPLE think are good laptops...I could read all day about laptops and their specifications...I just want to see what you all think.
Also, just for the record, the games I'll be playing are just internet games and a few others like "You don't know Jack!" and "Harry Potter". Thanks!

I purchased a laptop about 6 months ago. It is an Acer Aspire 5670. It was a little pricey, 1,500 (probably a little less right now), but it has not bogged down on any games yet. It is an intel duo core so theoretically it can do more things at once, has a 2 gig RAM, 120 gig hardrive, and an X1400 ATI graphics card. It runs just perfectly even with high graphix games like world of warcraft and doom. And you can get Norton for pretty cheap. The wireless is very efficient, it also has bluetooth. But you have to get microsoft office seperately. Mine is a 17in screen, but they make one with a 15 if you like smaller (and cheaper) it just doesnt have as much memory. oh, it also has a webcam!

My recommendation is for you to find the cheapest Dell in your pricerange and get it (www.dell.com). You can download and install Ad Aware from the Internet unless you are a complete fool and retard. That will serve ALL of your Word and Powerpoint needs (the actually important stuff), and wireless Internet cards are probably addable to any of their laptops.
Additionally, if you want to be playing a lot of games, a laptop isn't for you. Laptops play games like *** for the money and they're also notoriously unreliable and crappy in terms of computing power (multitasking). A desktop that's 2-3 years old can still blow most laptops out of the water, unless you buy your laptop for $4500 or the desktop cost $799 when it was bought.
You should probably do a little of your own research, too, as opposed to coming onto the Internet and trusting a bunch of strangers with your thousands of dollars.

there are a whole host of brands you can consider. check out cnet.com for reviews. they are pretty reliable in their analysis.
i would suggest a light model which comes with intel's core duo processor with 1 gb of memory and a 60 gb to 80 gb hard disk. look for one that comes with in-built wireless technology so you don't have to buy another wireless card. you will need to purchase ms word and powerpoint though. these cost quite a bit. however you can use openoffice, an open source free word pro, presentation and spreadsheet program. visit them at openoffice.org. it is compatible with ms word, excel and powerpoint. laptops are not dedicated gaming machines so most will have pretty basic graphics, sufficient for viewing videos and pics. but to play the occassional games it should be ok.

Go to Dell.com and take a look at their laptops. Their basic laptop will probably be just fine for you. I doubt you'll be playing Everquest on it. Also, you'll be much happier if you upgrade anything you get to 512MB of ram instead of the 256 standard.
Just an FYI - When you get the laptop - DOWNLOAD a virus scan program. The proprietary stuff they put on computers is just trash. You'll be better off protecting yourself with something that isn't mainstream. (Mainstream being Norton and McAfee)

An Apple iBook is your best bet.
You will never have to worry about installing drivers; wireless setup is effortless, there is Microsoft Office for Mac, some popular games are on it,.. and it can multitask like you have never seen !

i recently purchased a gateway (emachines) laptop with all features needed and got the "geek" squad to add the spyware, virus, etc software and it all came up to $700.00 from bestbuy. it also burns cds/dvds. it comes with a 60 day trial of microsoft office. which you can proper get a microsoft office upgrade for about another $100 plus.
