My 3 1/2 year old son wants me to read him his 8 year old brother's "chapter" books. While he truly does have an IQ significantly higher than average (been tested), will he comprehend what I am reading to him or should I "improvise" the story to his level?

if a child shows some interest in reading do not deny him or her. You can read anything like a comic book to the newspaper. He will enhance his vocabulary do not dumb it down. It's good for him and encourage this more.

I'd just read it as-is. But at the same time, don't rush through it. Allow him to interrupt and ask questions about what he's hearing.

The age ratings on books are for the average age a *child* could read it, not the age a child can understand it if it's read to them. You kid should be okay provided you make it enjoyable for him, and you will probably see an improvement in his vocab and literacy skills.

If he is interested enough to hear the story, read it to him as is. Every so often talk to him about what is going on in the story. That'll help him keep pace with what's going on, and also will improve his reading comprehension skills in the long run.

I would go ahead and read it to him! It will improve his vocabulary and comprehension! It would be very good for him. If it is over his head he will let you know what he doesn't understand or loose interest. I would ask him questions to make sure that he is following the story every 3 pages or so!

Read them. Don't change them. It's amazing to see that they understand. Challenge is good. Read the passage as written then talk about the picture ask questions the help him put it together
