Over time, the rate of divorce is actually higher than you mentioned. There are many reasons, however, why people might still chose to get married. Nonetheless, we have to redefine our expectations of marriage, especially what constitutes a successful marriage. Back in the day when the average lifespan was 45 and that was only if you were lucky, it was easy to say "...til death do us part..." because no one lived that long. Nowadays, many people are easily reaching the century mark. We should not be surprised that the perfect mate that we married at 18 might not be compatible for us at 38, 48, or beyond.
In a sane and rational world, i.e. one completely not like this one, the definition of a successful marriage might be one that merely makes it 20 or more years; that acknowledges the happiness each partner has had from it and contributed to it; that accepts that people change as they age and as their needs change, so too they may need new partners; and that ends gracefully with each partner supportive of the other's pursuit for growth with a new partner.

there are many reasons:
1. they love someone and can't live without them
2. they are forced to
3. if they didn't, humans will be extinct!!!
4. in some religions, u have to be married to have physical interactions :p
5. some ppl feel safe when there's some1 that's beside them and takes care of them
and i guess there are others...and anyway, divorce rates differ from country to country and if 1 in 3 marriages end in divorce, then y don't u be optimistic and hope that ur from the 2 that don't end in divorce? ;)

I thought it was 1 in 2 marriages that end in divorce? Well anyhow, I think the top two reasons for getting married are love and security.

Because not every marriage ends in divorce. And those who get married feel that they are in love and they are ready for that type of commitment. And those that marry and end up getting divorced probably married too soon or for the wrong reasons, or they were just selfish and couldnt wait.
