Stay away from Compaq, HP, eMachine, Acer... Aww heck, just get a Dell!
Norton and McAfee are both useless virus programs. There are many viruses out there that are written to be undectable and unremoveable by Norton and McAfee both.

The best type of computer, is a build-it-yourself. Any computer bought from a company like Dell, HP, or Sony are usually pieces of junk that come with "pre-installed" software you don't need. Half of the time, they usually come pre-installed with ad-ware or spy-ware on your computer to find out easier ways to scheme you into buying more things from the company, or from a fraternal company. It really is unfortunate, but that's the way things go in this world today.
The best thing to do is to buy a "bare-bones" PC kit that have most of the things installed. The things you will have to buy are:
Bare-bones PC Kit - Usually has the case, motherboard, and processor already installed for you.
RAM-Find out what type of RAM your motherboard uses.
Hard Drive - I would recommend Seagate or Maxtor for a brand, stay away from Western Digital.
Optical Drive - This is your DVD-ROM. I wouldn't waste your money on a CD-ROM because DVD-ROMs play CDs anyway. Most software companies are switching to DVDs because of the massage storage space they offer.
Input Devices - Keyboard, Mouse, Web Cam, Digital Camera. Keyboard and mouse are the most important. The others are optional.
Output Devices - Monitor, Speakers or Printers. Again, the monitor is important, but the speakers and printers are optional.
Operating System: Windows XP. If some nerd on here tells you "PUT LINUX CUZ ITS KOOL ITS FOR HAXORS" dont listen to them. I gurantee someone will post something about that. Linux is for advanced users only.
You can buy all this stuff at www.newegg.com they have great prices, and alot of free shipping on the stuff you need.
Take it from me, I have a degree in Computer Science and Industrial Manufacturing Applications.
Post for any more questions!
Oh, I would go with Norton. They are excellent with their updates.

I had a Compaq for years, and I hated it. I love my Dell. This is not to say that one COMPANY makes a better computer, because you could build a computer yourself. The best computer is one built to fit your expressed needs. Also, the components the computer is built with affect how the computer will work. Good internals make for good computers. My advice is to investigate each company's "system builders" and to decide what you're going to use the computer for. Gamers want lots of graphics power (expensive video cards, memory, etc.) while a business man wants modest performance and high stability for word processing, email, connectivity, etc. If you want to edit video, you'll need big hard drives to store large video files. The question is not who makes the best computer because computers serve different purposes when configured differently; rather, ask who makes a computer that will fit you and your needs.

Dell is one of the best on the market, but so are the ones you get at Wal-Mart they all do pretty much the same unless you are custom building, As far as Norton or Mcafee. Mcafee i think is so much better than Norton, Norton has crashed my system so many time's.You can also get AVG it is free and it is simple. Good luck

Dell & Gate way are good, but beware if you want to update yourself. With my Compac I can put just about anything in it. My friend has a dell & was trying to put a 10 gig hard drive in it, for more space. I now have two of them, because all I need is a connecting cable, available at any computer house.
You have to use dell or gateway for updates or improvements.
That stinks!

I dont care wich company makes the PC, as long as whats inside is good and at a good price.
Preferably, u can customize ur PC and build it urself, but if u havnt thought of that, then u obviously dont care much abt it, but if u tell me what u want to use it for ill reccomand what i can.
