20 miles.This is because the each car has travelled two sides of a right angled triangle of sides 8,6 miles. The hypotenuse is 10 miles. The distance between cars is the sum of two such hypotenuse which is 20 miles.

ok, imagine the cars going in opposite directions from one point. Each goes 8 miles. Imagine this as a line: 8 miles from one car, plus eight miles of the other car= 16 miles

c(squared)= a(squared)+b(squared)
c(squared)=16 (squared)+12(squared)
c(squared)=400
c= square root of 400
