20 miles.This is because the each car has travelled two sides of a right angled triangle of sides 8,6 miles. The hypotenuse is 10 miles. The distance between cars is the sum of two such hypotenuse which is 20 miles.

8^2 + 6^2 = c^2
64 + 36 = c^2
100 = c^2
c = 10
Thats just for one car from the starting point, double that to get the total distance that the cars are from each other.

ok, imagine the cars going in opposite directions from one point. Each goes 8 miles. Imagine this as a line: 8 miles from one car, plus eight miles of the other car= 16 miles
Theeen...it says that they went left for 6miles.
imagine this
<-----------l
................l
................l
................l
................l----------->
Actually, you have 2 right triangles! or just one. The heigh is 16, and one of the sides is 12(6+6)
O<--l
O....IO
O....l O
O....l O
O....l-----O->
OOOOOOO
wELL..i worked hard on that..but I hope you can realize. Then
c(squared)= a(squared)+b(squared)
c(squared)=16 (squared)+12(squared)
c(squared)=400
c= square root of 400
c=20 miles
I am not sure if it is right...but there might be some logic to it

Pythagoras says it is 20 miles
Pythagoras meets real world:
(1) Location. Which part of the world they start from. For example, the distance if they are in equator region is different from distance if they are in either of the the poles. This is due to the curvature of the earth.
(2) Terrain (if it has lots of ups and downs or if it is flat)
(3) Elevation (i.e. radius of earth - more commonly height above sea level - at the starting and ending points)
