OH BOY
HERE WE GO
THE FLOAT INYOUR GAS TANK (PART OF THE IN-TANK FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY) WORKS ON THE PRINCIPLE OF A VARIABLE RESISTER
AS THE LEVEL OF FUEL IN THE TANK GOES UP AND DOWN SO DOES THE FLOAT
THE VARYING DEGREES OF FLOAT LEVEL PRODUCES CORRESPONDING DEGREES OF RESISTANCE OF THE CURRENT SENT TO THE NEEDLE ON YOUR GAUGE CAUSING IT TO GO UP AND DOWN TELLING YOU HOW FULL THE TANK IS
YOU FAILED TO SAY IF THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME OR ONLY WHEN THE KEY IS ON WHICH IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE DIAGNOSIS
IF A WIRE HAS COME OFF AT THE SENDING UNIT AT THE TANK IT MAY CAUSE THE GUAGE TO JUST PEG ITSELF BECAUSE IT GETS NO RESISTANCE FROM THE FLOAT
CHECK ALL WIRES
IF THE SENDING UNIT IN THE TANK IS DEFECTIVE YOU WILL PROBABLY NEED TO REPLACE IT AS A WHOLE UNIT WITH PUMP AND ALL WHICH IS IN THE $200.00 BALL PARK
BETTER TO FIND A WIRING PROBLEM
GOOD LUCK

We just changed out the sending pump/sending unit in my husbands jeep. His gauge wasn't registering right either. Once we got the pump unit free from the tank, we discovered the sending unit was bad. After we replaced it, the gauge worked as it should. That may or may not be what is wrong with yours. The guy with 20 years experience knows what he is talking about.
