I've noticed that YouTube, Google, and the upcoming Microsoft Soapbox video sharing services use Flash for their videos. I was especially surprised that Soapbox isn't going to use Windows Media Video. Anyone know why Flash seems to be the format of choice?

Flash is a preferred medium since it is able to interact more via server communication and response when controlling media. In otherwords how many times have you used it, how long, who, score, etc. The biggest reason is file size and bandwidth, it makes it possible to have a complex game or media run on the site will the smallest amount of file space and bandwidth.

Flash allows you to view it seemlessly, such as you could be on a website that loads a welcome page but once you click on a link it says loading and gets the next movie for you rather than bouncing all over a website. Things seem to magicly replace what you were looking at just seconds before and return back without noticing what really took place. (The extensive programming that goes on behind the scene.)
