Sounds like a fuel filter problem and/or dirty injectors to me.

If it runs fine at idle, but not when you give it gas, the engine is starving for gasoline so it's most likely the fuel filter, or your fuel pump is not supplying enough pressure to the injectors or your fuel pressure regulator is not working properly to maintain pressure.

I recommend replacement in this order (do them one at a time and hopefully the ones before the expensive stuff will solve your problem):
Fuel Filter,
Fuel Pump,
Injector Cleaner,
Fuel Pressure regulator.
Fuel Injectors.

check your tps (throttle position sensor) it is what communicates with your car to tell it how far you are opening the throttle.

it could be ( but i would highly doubt) an injector problem.

fuel pump.... maybe. I would put this right up with the tps. (more likely than injectors).

that sound you are hearing from the engine is not backfiring. it is detonation and can mess up you engine pretty bad...

93 Mitisubishi Diamante...
Just put your money towards a new car and try to sell that one. Good luck!
