Displaying your union jack certainly falls under freedom of expression and there is no law against it.

What you seem to be asking is why can't I do this without anyone taking offense. But alas, others are entitled to their reactions and the universe doesn't revolve around you.

And for the record, I'm sure there are many Americans who aren't particularly thrilled to have Muslim mosques in their neighborhood.

The Union Jack is your countries flag, show it with pride!
The muslims didn't start your country, & have no right to complain if they are here. They want to move to places because they are so good, then change it into a cave like they left behind.
Don't back down!
I will fly the American flag for the same reason, it is our flag & we can be proud of it!
If you don't like it, go back to where you came from!

It annoys me when people read headlines in the Daily Facist and then take it as fact. There is nothing to stop you flying the Union Flag outside your home. This is not Nazi Germany you know (even if an increasing number of Brits would prefer it if it was)

I think the law was changed recently and we can now display the Union flag without planning permission, within certain limits. Nice to see someone else is proud of our Flag.

Hey, we've got the same problem here in the US -- You display the flag, and you're inastantly anti-muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-everything. You ask me, there are too many people in the world with delicate sensibilities....

Anyway, I say screw 'em. They want to live in YOUR country, they deal with seeing YOUR flag displayed. Don't back down -- stand proud and if somebody gets "offended", tell 'em to go screw.

Now. now, calm down.
Where I live it's not the muslims you have to be concerned about -
or the do gooders either!

Why would it upset people if you are in your own country? I think it would be ill mannered for any one from outside Britain to make any comment. Course your country is very polite where as we Americans would tell them get F'd and fly it higher!
