What beams can I safely remove from my loft without damaging the structure of the house?

Removing structural elements of your roof (inside the attic/loft) can have disasterous results. Best advice is to hire the services of an experienced contractor to frame the structural elements of your loft project. Make sure that a building permit is issued for the job. The building inspector will then have to sign off on the structural integrity of any changes that are made to your home. Once the structural framing is done, you can elect to have the space finished by the contractor, or you can finish the balance yourself.

By the way, it is common for contractors to give free estimates, so use them to gather information, advice, and price estimates.

Good luck with your project.

Loft Beams

Be careful!!! You would or should get some expert advise on that.. VERY IMPORTANT.. Most beams are there for a purpose... for constructive support reasons. To remove a particular beam may reduce the ability to hold up the roof .... or to support the ceilings, etc... It is doubtful that you should remove any but an expert would be able to tell you if there are any.

Bad news, you should check with an architect or an engineer. My neighbor took out one beam too many, and he is constantly troubled with leaks from the room. Even though the building still seems structurally sound, the missing beam has implications.

NONE!!!!!!! You cannot do this without an archetect's approval in any place in the US...do not play games with safety! Those beams are there for a reason, and obviously, you do not know the reasons....again, do NOT play games with lives, and that is exactly what you would be doing. Good luck

You need a professional to look at your loft. It is not something that can be answered here. A professional needs to see how it is built.

It isn't possible to give a definitive to your question without observing the situation. In all likelihood, what you wish to do should present very little difficulty. You really need a qualified, experienced carpenter to give you a good answer. Good Luck!!

If they are NOT load bearing, proceed with caution. If they are, leave them alone. How can you tell if they are load bearing? Do they support any major structural component above them?
