I've had a homeless person waving a sign that said:
"The truth is, I need a drink" Can you spare a buck?
Now this guy was at least telling the truth, and I gave him a buck.
If you see a sign "Will work for food", ask them what kind of work? Then offer them a job painting your house or fixing the roof and give them food. I guarantee you, everyone of them will run!
The folks who think that the homeless are trying to get money for food are idiots and fools. At least when I hear one tell the truth (like above), I'll honor him and give him a buck. Hey, truth works.

A) Give him/her some $. Rarely as it's normally not for food that they want it - you are to actually donate to shelters instead.
B) Offer to buy him/her something to eat. I have bought food and handed them the FOOD. (in lieu of giving them money)
C) Leave him/her some food for thought. They don't need that
D) Make a rude or sarcastic comment. They don't need that either

B. My reason for this is where I am there are some "homeless" people that aren't really homeless they actually have really nice houses, cars and better clothes then I do. They dress in rags and get people to give them money so they don't have to spend their own. I know it sounds ridiculous but they do. So if they say they will come with me to get food I know they really need it.

I would give him money and if I didn't have cash on me I would offer to buy him some food or some alcohol, because sometimes that's all they want. A little alcohol probably makes their situation a lot better.

B) That way I know that he really wanted food and didn't want to spend the money on something else because some people fake being homeless to get money.

b. offer to buy him/her something to eat.
if he/she really is hungry, he/she would take that offer. i don't want to hand out any money because who knows if the person is really going to use that to buy food -- it could be other things like alcohol or drugs.
but honest to goodness -- i might say i don't have money and walk away. there are places here in america that the homeless can go to for shelter and food but they choose not to -- that's up to them isn't it? also a teacher once told me that if you give money to them, they do not learn how to be independent.
anybody who's poor can live comfortably if he/she is hardworking.

If their not polite about it they get none of the above. If polite and i have, i will offer to buy. Most just want for something else. I think there should be a ban on panhandling. Its a nuisance for most people incuding me. Athough i don't think the law can stop it.
Take care.

I would probably buy something for him if I was in a good mood, but if I was in a bad mood Id move to the other side of the street to avoid him
