The cause? The various alliances that existed between all of the European nations. There is a long standing history of alliances and wars(depending on the political climate) for Europe and this was no different. Now they just had better weapons to cause more harm with.
To blame? Human beings who were quickly acquiring more and more destructive weapons and did not realize the implications of using them on a mass scale.
They had not learned that with the destructiveness of these weapons they would also have to learn how to compromise and not be so quick to 'jump the gun'.

You can't blame WW1 on Hitler, he was only a soldier.
The cause of WW1 was the assassination of Archduke Frances Ferdinand in Serbia. Germany Came to the help of its ally Austria when they declared war, which shortly after wards enveloped all of Europe. The German Government is not technically at blame for the War either, though they were the reason why grew to the scope it did and lasted the length it did.

WWI was a result of imperial expansionist. More accurately as a result of its exhausted limit of expansion. The Arch Duke Ferdinand was in the Balkans to stem the tide of conflict between the Serbian nationalist wishing to throw out the Austrian-Hungarian aristocracy. Had it not happen then it would of inevitable happened somewhere else in Europe as all the imperial powers had reached the zenith of power and had nowhere else to go but encroach on other imperial powers. Therefore, the blame for WWI rests with all European powers at theat time.

We should blame the guys who assassinated the Austrian Heir
"On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, in Sarajevo." (See my source)
He was the cause of WWI. Although Hitler fought in WWI, he is not to blame for it ;) Only for WWII.
