Marceldev29 is right, it means "from many, one". It is part of the 1792 mint authorization act that all coins of the US must have this motto, along with Liberty, United States of America, and the date. Also, the act says that all precious metal coins must have figure of liberty on the obverse, and the national symbol, (the eagle), on the reverse. The phrase "In God we Trust" was added to our coins during the civil war.
