If you are in possession of anything, for example a sitting tenant in a property, or even a squatter in a property, let alone an object on which there may be a dispute (money, goods, whatever) it means the other person has to go to courts and proably spend money trying to get you to give it up.

You can sit and wait (and even get legal aid to defend yourself probably) so that having possession is an advantage - hence the expression 9/10ths of the law - even if you lose you have continued with possession till you have lost it in court !

I am assuming this was asked in the U.K. - Not all countries are so democratic and your rights may not appear to be 9/10ths !!!

I can't help with the media player question, but 9/10ths refers to the person who is in physical possession of the object is usually viewed to be the owner and it is up to the second party to "prove" that the object belongs to them.

It means the party that has possession ,well they have it and the other party can only argue that they think they should have it

if you have it then the onus is on the other party to provide evidence that you don't and they do own it
