The heart pumps blood at a high pressure through arteries, this oxygenated blood filters through cappilaries in the body, and returns to the heart in veins. Blood flows in 1 direction only.

In between pumps, when the heart is refilling with blood for the next pumping action, the semilunar valves shut close. This is to prevent back flow into the hearts chamber now filling with blood so that blood flows in one direction.

The walls of the arteries are lined with elastic tissue, which during heart contractions streches (the pulse beating outwards). When the heart stops a pumping action, the semilunar valves close, and the pressure in the arteries drops. When the pressure drops the elastic tissue in the arteries recoils back in(the dip in a pulse). This cycle continues, and for each heart contraction the arteries strech out, so this is an easy way to count the number of times your heart contracts in a minuite.

One more bit of trivia before I go and have a nice cup of tea. On TV medical dramas, they refer to heart pressure in 2 values-"120 over 80". These two values are refering to the blood pressure when the heart is squeezing blood into the arteries(120-sometimes called the systolic blood pressure), and the blood pressure when the heart is refilling with blood for the next pump (80-some times called the diasystolic BP).

It is when the heart is beating inside the body and vibrating the blood with it. So when you put your hand to your neck or your wrist you are feeling the vibration of the blood backed up by the heart beat.
