My sister is two years old, she'll be three in December and she doenst really talk. She says the little words like dad, mom, dog, but not like most two/three olds. The doctors just think she is being lazy about it (this coming from multiple doctors, none of which say the is "slow"), but i think differently. She understands you if you tell her to get something or were going for a car ride, but she doenst know how to speek the words. My parents never had problems like this with me 20yrs and my sister 11yrs old. Did anyone ever hear of such a thing? And if so what happend, and how are they today..??

It's completely possible that you're sister is not slow or lazy but has siblings that talk for her and meet her needs with her communication skills where they are currently. She probably just doesn't feel the need to communicate in a more clear, concise manner as this has been working for her.

Apparently my older brother did all my talking for me and I didn't think there was a problem. When I was around children my age, I decided to talk. I'm 33 now and own a medical/legal business where communication is vital so I suppose I'm doing quite well now! :-)

Try giving your sister a little space and make her communicate with you by trying not to talk for her or give her what she wants when she uses a minimal amount of words. Also, introduce her to children her age. Talk to her in full, complete sentences and forgo the baby talk. You're doing her and yourselves an injustice if you use baby talk. See if that works. If not, try a speech therapist who specializes in her age range.

Good luck and be patient!

Two is not a magical number for anything including the development of speech. Some children don't talk until age 4 and some not well until after the age of 6. My youngest son, my 7th, was 4 before he said hardly anything and it wasn't like he didn't have a lot of teachers. He is now a college student and talks nonstop.

Does she have autism or some othe developmental disability? (Not to scare you.) Anyway, I was born deaf. My parents realized it when I was about 2 yrs old and I got surgery for it. What happened, from what I understand, was that there was excessive fluid built up in my ears and it had hardened. Like I said, I had surgery and can hear fine. However, I didn't start talking until I was 3 yrs old and had to go thru speech therapy.

My daughter was similar, but the problem was equated to ear troubles. She had fluid in her ears for years, not ear infecions, but fluid buildup that caused the three ear bones not to vibrate, so sound was not registering to her. She had tubes place in her ear drums and now can hear, but she is six and still does not have the speaking skills of an average six year old, despite being tested to be gifted.

wow this is just how my son was, hardly said a word or put more than two words together until he was 3, he could also follow commands and could talk just chose not to, he had older sibs who did the talking for him. He is now 18 and in the honors program in college and now he wont shut up!!!...I would not worry, once she starts school if there is a problem they will discover it.

Yes, actually I have heard of this, I believe Maya Angelou, the poet spoke about her own experience as a little girl in her book,"I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS". I hope this provides some insight.

children develop dif. from ev1 else in that same age group. if she's doing evthing else like walking, etc. i wouldn't worry about it. if all she did was stare at the wall, then i'd be worried. i don't think u have that problem, tho.
