I recently had my service engine light come on and I got the codes back PO715 and PO731. I know what the codes mean, the first is the turbine speed sensor malfunction and the second is gear 1 incorrect ratio. However, now since I know what the codes mean, what do I do about it? I took it to a mechanic and they were going to charge me $80 to tell me what was wrong. Is there anything I can do, or do I need to do anything? I really don't understand exactly what these codes mean or if I should just reset the codes and do nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My light came on on Monday morning (9/18/06) I went and got the codes read and took it to the shop today (9/19/06). I reset it and so far it hasn't come back. My car is driving fine, so if the light comes back I'll go back and get it tested again and go from there.

FIRST and this is happening over and over - people ask for help but they dont give any information.
The codes u gave are generic OBDII codes they are what now is standard to all vehicles. Before service stations had to have different scanner attachments to be able to view Codes. Now with that said - knowing what the codes are means nothign to someone like yourself other then that it points you in to somewhat of a direction of where the problem might be.
Codes are used by techs to interpurt or look in the direction of a sysmptom. By the shop charging you $80.00 to look at the vehicle they would go a little further in depth with the codes you already know and use them to determine where to go from there.
I think you might be working with a Dodge??
The Turbine Speed Sensor is a sensor that measures Turbine speed in a Transmission - this information is used to see the variance of Motor to Transmission speed variance and by the it knows if the transmission is slipping or used for LOCK - UP conditions for Overdrive.
It seems your issues are in the Transmission area. 1st question I would have for you would be - has this been going on for a long time ? if yes then you should address it sooner then later - IF this is the first time and you are experiancing no symptoms with the transmission then id say reset the light and drive it - if it returns recheck them see of they are the same ones - then have a repair facility like a transmission shop look in to further diagnostics.
Dont bother going to repair facilities that are not equipt to do correct transmission diagnostics - waist of money.

For any real help, we need to know what make, model and year.
But the short answer is, these are warnings for your information, and should be addressed soon. Do not ignore them, or the consequences could be MUCH more expensive.
If it is under warranty, or under Federal emissions warranty, take it back to the dealer for repair.
You will be required to pay for at least diagnostics, and possibly a pro-rata percentage for repairs.
If warranty is not applicable, take it to a REPUTABLE transmission shop for repair.
Again, you will be obligated to a diagnostic fee (in all cases only fair), but the repairs should be able to be performed at this stage without the necessity of removing the whole transmission,
'Be aware, that when inspections are complete, they may well recommend a complete overhaul, as they cannot tell what they are facing until they can actually see it.
Good Luck

What, When, & How ???
What are we working on ???
When did the codes come on ???
How is it running or shifting ???
Well something caused the light to come on and by resetting the code no one can further investigate it.. But if the car is running properly then don't worry about. could be a glitch in the trans while shifting or maybe it just had a brain fart.... Good luck.
