try looking at "an Inspector Calls" by J B Priestly for inspiration, its a great play and have very few characters in it.
Another thing to do it think of a dramatic situation that has happened in your life, (real situations rarely have more than 6 people involved) and embroider it and elaborate on it. If the plot then involves a lot of people, get your main characters to speak of then rather than tell their story too.
The trick is to have a few characters that are REALLY INTERESTING, that really grab you and keep the attention..
good luck

Start with something you like to do or know how to do (singing, going to movies, studying?)Then pick a place that you know of dont make it up because then it becomes harder to make a mental picture then already knowing what it looks like at the place you go to. (If you are preforming it make it your classroom).now you have setting. pick six characters or less if allowed. more characters=alot more work, then on paper write a description of the characters you will then be adding color and you and readers/listeners will see the characters personality and mood. Another thing time, time must make sense with the plot. Now with your characters who is the protaganist and the antagonist or the good guy/main character and the bad guy/troublemaker. now you are ready to write. The main character is what you will start with and end with. Now the purpose of the antagonist is to cause problems for the main character. to keep it entertaining which also allows you to write more. if you have an extra day email me for more help if needed. Just look at your family or friends, and develop funny or dramatic character from there.

Art imitates life.

Now get writing.
