I have been playing guitar on and off for 10 years. My friends and I are making a band (sort of) and we have too many guitarist and no bass player. I was thinking about taking it up. Any hints, suggestions, advice, or personal comments are appriciated.

Thanks!!!

I switched from guitar to bass many years ago. It's not too difficult a transition at first, but it will take some time and practice to get really good. Once you do though, you'll find that a decent bassist will get more gigs than guitar players. I recommend reading music and learning some music theory, as well as getting familiar with as many different styles as possible. Eventually you might get the urge to switch from electric bass to upright...and then life as you know it is pretty much over.

If you're a pretty good guitar player, you should be able to play the bass with no trouble. Some of the best bass players switched from guitar. Most of the can play really good guitar but took up the bass, kinda like you, when needed.

Work on the bass, but keep up the guitar. You never know when the band will split and you might need to go on your own.

if u have been playing guitar its not hard to learn the bass, but that dosent mean u have to just pick a bass start playing. It'll need so much of practise. And nothing is hard and easy. If u play solos with all tequniques like tapping, tremolo, vibratos and all u'll find the bass easier. But if u just play some chords then bass would be a bit harder. and depends on the style of your music. And if u think that u have to play any instrument in ur band that means u have to play it dont think about that its hard or easy, its just your job u gotta do.

Personally, I don't play the guitar. But 2 of my friends play. They say that learning the bass is easier than learning guitar. They've been playing guitar for several years and they have a friend who can play bass and they both picked it up really fast. Hope I helped.

One transition will be learning to read bass clef instead of treble clef, but that's not too difficult. If you play by tabs, it will be even easier, but won't challenge you as much as a musician.

What helps me is thinking of the bass as a guitar with 4 strings.
In a pinch, just play the lowest bass note of the chord that would be played.

Hope your band has great success!

You can be really creative on bass if you bother-but it is not as forgiving for sloppiness as guitar. The rhythm section is the true heart and soul of any band .There are some amazing bassist out there so go for it.Guitarist are a dime a dozen.

Its all depends on your committment level.
And your ahead of the game, as you already play one string guitar.

Go for it!
