When you bought the video tapes you buy a license to use the material for personal use. If you make a copy as a back up, which is what you effectively doing here this is fine as long as you use the DVD in the same manner, ie for personal viewing in your own home and not allowing the copied material to be leased or sold.
If you are a teacher you may have more of an issue because you are then broadcasting to a sector of the public in the course of business and this would not be OK. Although if you bought the video for personal use and have been using it in this way then you will have been in breach of the license and broadcasting regs anyway.
As for the MAPP rubbish if this was not allowed none of us would be able to put our CDs onto our MP3 players.

All tapes come with that warning to NEVER EVER duplicate in any form. So yes, it is illegal but difficult to enforce unless you make several copies to sell or otherwise distribute.

If the video is yours and you actually paid for it there should be no problem as long as you will use it for your own personal use. No selling or passing it on to your friends.

IF you do not mass produce the reproductions, and use them only for the purposes stated, you should be OK. However, be aware that many VHS have programs to keep them from being copied.
