but can a woman ovulate while on a period?

Nope, because menstrual cycle or mensis consists of 4 stages i.e. Follecular Stage, Ovulation Stage, Luteal Stage and Menstrual Stagen (period). When you bleed and the waste comes out of your body, that is the last and 4th stage that you call periods. Ovulation takes place in the second stage which takes place on 14th or 15th day of the cycle. It means that ovulation exactly occurs in the mid of the cycle. Unfertilized ovules come out as a waste, but it isn't called ovulation. Ovulation is an internal mechanism.

no - ovulation takes place about 12 days before the period - that is when the egg is released. if a woman is having a period the egg has already broken down and is being expelled from the body

No, the period comes on the 0th to around the 5th day while ovulation happens on the 14th day of the 28 day cycle.

It's not normal, but then not unheard of either. I mean women have gotten pregnant despite being on their period at the time of intercourse, it's just very rare.
