I only have one phone jack in my apartment and was told that I could not share the phone line with dsl because I have to have a long extension cord to reach the living room with the phone.

You should be able to use one jack for both DSL and your phone. The issue may be the length of the extension cord. When the signal is shared, there is a limit on how long the extension like that can be. Consider getting a cordless phone where the base can set near the phone jack, but you can have the handset in the living room near you.

No it does not need a decicated outlet. I have mine through a "splitter" which has not caused any problems for mine.
