You can't prevent it but you can decrease your odds of getting a cold by washing your hands with warm water and a good antibacterial soap on a regular basis. If you're unable to do so, then use an antibacterial hand gel but this is not as effective as good old fashioned soap and water.

Keep your hands out of your eyes. Your eyes are actually where the virus enters the body and you really don't realize how many times you rub your eyes. Sneeze or cough into your arm or sleeve rather than your hand to avoid transferring mucus (read "germs") into your eyes.

And last, get as much fresh air as you possibly can. During the winters in colder climes, we tend to stay inside where we're recycling air. The more active you can stay, the healthier you'll be over all.

You can not prevent colds, but you can do your best to avoid them by being as healthy as possible. Have an excellent diet full of fruit and vegetables, do your exercise, and get some fresh air every day. Using this method if you get a cold the symptoms should not last as long as if you were unfit, if you do not avoid them. This is what I do and I have not had a cold for 2 years.

Eat healthy foods and take vitimins. Keep your intake of vitimin c high by drinking orange juice and/or taking extra vitimin c tablets. Try to avoid people who are coughing and sneeezing as much as is possible. Make sure that you wash your hands frequently, and if you cannot get to a sink with soap and water, use those antibacterial wipes. It is difficult to avoid every germ that is out there; but this will help. Also make sure that you are getting enough rest, as if you are sleep deprived; you can get sick a lot more easily. Have a good day!

Take 500 mg vitamin C 4 times a day. At the first sign of cold symptoms (usually a scratchy throat) start dissolving a Cold-Eeze lozenge in your mouth and repeat according to the package directions. Also start taking Echinacea herb according to the directions on the container to stimulate your immune system.
It is a good idea to take a good multi vitamin and mineral pill daily for your general health too. Drink lots of water.
Esberitox is a great cold pill if you can find it. Check your local health food outlets.
Good luck!

*Wash your hands A LOT...many people don't wash enough and then they touch doorknobs, tables, railings etc. and leave their germs for you. Use antibacterial handsoap or lotions.

*Try not to rub your eyes. Medical studies have shown that the mucosa of the eyes is one of the prime entry ports for cold germs. So if you must touch them, use a clean handkerchief or tissue.

*Drink lots of water. A hydrated system is more efficient at fighting colds, and now the central heating is going on in many schools etc. you dry out faster.

*Taking echinacea etc. only helps if you get started BEFORE heavy cold season sets in, so start now. It's a preventative not a cure.

*Don't be shy about asking sneezers and coughers to cover their mouths! Tell them you don't want their cold! Wearing a face mask helps but is a little extreme, I agree...

*Eat a healthy diet, lots of fruit and veg to keep your resistance up.

Drink a cup of green tea every morning, it helps your immune system. Bring liquid hand sanitizer to rub your hands down with in case you touch the same surfaces sick people touch or sneeze/cough on. Use garlic in your food. (My theory on this is that people don't like someone's breath after eating garlic, so they and their germs keep their distance. haha.) Get plenty of rest, even if you're not sick. Take vitamins if you don't already, and get exercise everyday, even if not a whole lot. Maybe take a few tissues to class, you can cover your mouth/nose when they sneeze or cough nearby.

Airborne is good. The best way to avoid colds is to boost your immune system, by getting plenty of sleep, fresh air, exercise, fruits and vegetables, and by avoiding caffeine, alcohol and drugs.
If you do get a cold be sure to take Zycam right away. It can shorten the severity and duration of the cold. Sometimes you can get over it in 4 days.

You can minimize your chances of getting a cold (having a cold virus enter your body via your mouth) by:

Washing your hands often.
Washing your hands before your eat.
Washing your hands after using a computer keyboard or mouse (you never know who sneezed on it before you used it)
Not rubbing you eyes with your fingers.
Not putting your fingers in your mouth.
Not kissing anyone unless you don't mind catching their cold.

The only way to prevent yourself from catching a cold, is to wear a full-bodied bio-hazard suit or Michale Jackson Air Filter Face Mask. You'll look silly, but they work.

haa chuuuuw... sorry... Did I get'cha?

UNFORTUNATLy!!!

there is no real way to prevent you from getting cold when you are close to somebody has it.

COLD is caused by so strong virus that can move very fast from person to another.

BUT
you may avoide infecting by some simple actions such as putting tissue on your nose and mouth when you are close to infected person

IN WINTER TRY TO DRINK A LOT OF LEMONADA AND ORNGE JUICE TO GET VETAMIN C

Washing your hands is very important, and try to avoid being direct line to anyone's sneezes. In large part, keeping resistance high and getting lots of vitamen C is about all you can do.
