We have a copy of Chess Base and I think Fritz is the engine it uses, but we paid for it which means my husband probably couldn't find a place to download it for free.

In short, it will be very difficult. You can purchase the latest Fritz package from www.chessbase.de, or www.chessbaseusa.com fairly cheaply. I bought my copy of Fritz6 for $30 a few years ago.

Winboard is a good (free) program which supports a number of different engines, and has a large number of them available for download on their site. It also has built-in functionality to allow you to connect to play vs. human or computer opponents on ICC or FICS.

You have to pay Chessbase for Engine downloads such as Crafty/Junior/Shredder/Fritz, but there are a large number of good engines available at http://www.playwitharena.com/directory/engines.htm
