All children handicapped or not are call little bundles of joy. All children are special. No history behind it. It was just a way to distinguish them from the rest.

All babies are called little bundles of joy, not just handicapped kids.

The term "special" usually refers to a child who is mentally handicapped and not capable of normal mental development. The term is used so that the kids will feel better about themselves. Mentally handicapped kids learn and develop differently than their normal peers. They are also mentally younger, even as adults.

Is your glass half empty or half full? Why "handicapped?" Why not 'special?' It appears condesending to say 'special' but in truth they are just normal....as normal as anybody else! think about it ! How many folks went through puberty with a anuerism they eventually died from? So you can see that a child has one arm at birth, big deal! With love and prosthetics this one-armed child becomes an over-acheiveing adult! How many "normal" folks get buried everyday...Lots do!

I've often thought the same thig. Personally I think its just a sad human nature to 'polish over' when bad things happen in life, to make things seem much better than they really are.

Ever notice when people talk of someone who recently dies? No matter how horrible and disgusting that person may have been in life, they always say something positive. I'm not sure why people can't just say "He was a horrible person, he cheated on his wife, slapped around his kid and was an alcoholic." Instead they say "He saw many challenges in life and worked through them."

I think its just a cop-out excuse to make ourselves feel better.

I work with handicapped children and I find that no matter how their life is they will smile when things are tough and that sure shows you that they can find joy in the worst times.

I've always though all kids was little bundles of joy. You know kids are born without the knowledge...to lie .cheat..steal.....they learn that!

"Special" was an early euphemism for "handicapped" when people started being PC. My son has autism and while you may hear me refer to "special ed" or "special needs" I never refer to my son as special as a way to describe his disability. Special Ed is accurate..this is specialized education. Special needs is much the same...these are people with medical or developmental needs that require special adaptations or assistance.

As for my son..he is special. So is his sister. So are all the other children we know and all the ones we don't. But his being special has nothing to do with the fact he has autism. It has to do with the fact that he is my son and I love him.
