While I have never done this I would think it is because it is easier than watch someone you thought you cared for in pain and know that you are why.
Of course there are also some very insensitive men. And how do you really know if he feels guilty about it? Men don't talk about their feelings. That hurts even more.

We’re sorry (some of us.) I have never meant to cause anyone grief. It must be something encoded into my genetic make-up that I just can’t help…in the y-chromosome or something like that. Maybe if we isolated it, we could breed it out and save our children some grief.
Still…it’s too late for us.

men are typically less emotional than women, and that transfers over to relationships. It sucks, but thats their flaw not ours.
