I'm getting new brake pads put on my car, which is a 98 mustang gt and theyre trying to charge me almost $250, just for the rear brakes, theyre claiming that part of the reason its so expensive is, the "recomended" ceramic pads. Now, I know very little about cars, do I really need these expensive pads?

Ceramic brake pads just refer to the composition of the pad. Your 98' Mustang came factory with this type of pads on the rear and the shop is only following the replacement recommendation of the factory. Ceramic pads should be no more expensive than any other pad, what they are trying to sell you is a Premium part. Ask for the mid-grade part and the price will be more to your liking.

Ceramic brake pads are best for braking during heavy racing and appear to last longer than the semi metallic ones. If you are at a reputable auto repair facility, they will be telling you the truth. If not, then you may be taken for a ride. I would also ask other repair facilities what they charge including the dealer and don't forget to ask them if the car requires the ceramic pads or not. That way you know for sure and can take the appropriate course of action.

It depends. Would you rather spend $150, followed by a $500 deductible when your car does not stop in time and you drive into another car? (Not to mention the hundreds more in higher insurance premiums after that)

I wouldn't mess around with brakes. It's probably the most important part of a car. If you are going to drive a performance car like a Mustang you need to get good brakes.

If you think you are being ripped off get a second opinion.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the only ceramic parts in brakes are the discs, and these are fitted only to highly-specialised performance cars such as Ferrari and Porsche.

The cost of these as an option on a new car is several thousands of $.

My feeling is that someone is trying to rip you off - but do check this out with an official Ford dealer before you accuse them!! As I say, I could be wrong....

If it IS an attempted scam, it sounds to me like a serious fraud.

I hope this helps.....perhaps you could post the result of your enquiry on the same page as your question, or email me at X5576@aol.com

well if its just brakes your going to dont go there. My mother did her own for under 100 bucks. what you want to do is find a smart man and have him do it for you. Go with what you think you need for your driving habits.
