Yep, you could also put it in "sleep" mode, then it is on standby. It's like turning it off, but it is still on, but uses less power, then when you want to go on it again you just push a button

Can you leaving it running 24/7- yes. Should you leaving it running 24/7- another question.
There are certain task that Windows only performs at start up and hut down. Including clearing of temp files, swap files, and releasing memory. If your PC is never rebooted, those housekeeping task are never performed. Over time it will affect the speed of the computer. Plus many of the MS security patches do not take effect until the next reboot. So if you do not reboot, you might as well not be updating your computer. None of the patches are working and you are vulnerable to attacks, hacks and viruses. So at least once a week you should reboot. (And doing it after a crash does not count because the shut down housekeeping usually does not happen).
As far as effects on your computer: if you left you car running 24/7 (besides running out of gas) do you think it would cause additional wear and tear on the engine? Same rule applies to your computer processor, hard drive, etc. While a computer is designed for extended use, it is not designed for infinite usage. It will shorten the life of the PC - especially the monitor.
Do I leave my own computer running 24/7 - most of the time.

Yes, but have your hard drives turn off after an hour or so, otherwize it will shorten the life of the hard drive alot. All you have to do is right click on the desktop, choose properties. Then go to the screensaver tab, and press on the button that says 'power options'. It's in there. Also it can turn off your display after a certain amount of time.

It sure is ok Albert Fish. You can set your power settings if you right click on your desktop so that your screen turns off, hard drives hibernate, etc.
Right click > Properties > Screen Saver > Power
I personally have my machines set to sleep after a given amount of time. I haven't noticed a spike in my utilities and I've been doing this for years. A little bit more, but it's marginal.

Take care not to overheat the components by keeping the RAM busy for long, its a PC not military 24/7 surveillance. give youself and the comp soem break for ideal working. Maintain it for long time use and avoiding data damage. Keep you monitor OFF though for saving power.

Yes I do the same. I've heard that if you shut down and turn on your computer, it takes up alot of energy. I think as long as you have the area well ventilated. Also it's better to have your computer on a table or something instead of the floor especially carpet as dust gets into the computer much more faster causing it to heat up alot more.

Yes it's actually better as long as programs such as music applications and downloads are closed. What you should do is run an anti virus program every night set to when you know you wont be at your computer. Screen savers, however, are not so great. Set it so that the screen goes black when not in use so it can rest.

Well, other than leaving your unattended computer available for mis-use by hackers, etc., you also may not get a notice of valuable updates on software. The computer checks that when you boot up. (Similar to your cell phone, if you never turn it off it won't update the software or home area.)
Also, your wasting electricity.
